Christ Hospital offering staff big bonuses
to stay By:
Business Courier, November 3, 2003, Cincinnati, Ohio. |
 |
| In response to the continuing shortage of
critical care nurses in the Cincinnati area, Christ Hospital said
it has a new program that pays out hefty bonuses to staff nurses
who make long-term commitments.
The hospital said it will pay up to $30,000 for eligible staff who
promise to stay for at least three years. That includes new hires
and existing staff members, the hospital said. The hospital also
will pay a $7,500 referral bonus to those who refer individuals
who are hired for eligible positions.
The bonuses will be given in 10 critical care areas: cardiovascular
intensive care unit, surgical intensive care unit, medical intensive
care unit, three telemetry units, cath lab, electrophysiology lab,
angiography and the emergency department. Eligible positions include:
all registered nurses, including case managers, clinical nurse specialists,
clinical coordinators and educators; all cardiovascular techs; all
special procedures techs; and all licensed professional nurses.
Christ said the bonus is the largest recruitment and retention bonus
program ever offered by a local hospital or system. The hospital
said it is currently filling the positions by using expensive agency
nurses, and with the opening of its Heart Center of Greater Cincinnati
next month, additional patient volume is expected. “ |

Larger Hospital Chains Embrace Foreign Nurse
Program By:
Rich Byrd |

Many of the nation’s largest hospital
groups have begun and/or joined Jasneek in developing alternative
hiring programs. As viewed by most hospital Administrations, such
current bonuses programs only steals or takes staff from one hospital
to another within the same community. Hence, the true nursing shortage
problem is not only corrected but is exasperated. Therefore, this
forces other hospitals in the area, already cash strapped to even
become more hostage to local hiring practices.
One may note that the larger and nation enterprises
have begun to address the national problem in a more discipline
form. Hence, performing and growing their international two and
three year programs. Jasneek has been fortune to becoming part of
this national endeavor with state of the art recruitment practices
and policies.
It is noted and evidenced that the current
and future nursing schools are not nor will be not to produce sufficient
nurses. The unions are demanding more staffing, and the only manner
to enhance the solution(s) is to add to the nursing professionals
with international born and trained nurses. The only question is
when will each institution acknowledge and address the issue(s)?
